Low Carb Beverages

With low carb, there are still drink choices out there and it depends on which way you want to go.  If you don’t mind artificial sweeteners, then you have a lot of options.

But me personally, I just don’t like artificial sweeteners.  So that limits my choices a bit, but believe it or not, my preferred low carb beverage is H2O.  Just plain ol water.  Tasty, sweet on it’s own and zero carbs.  And it goes with everything.  And as much as I probably should filter it, I don’t even bother.

I do drink other low carb beverages as well.  And mostly they are in the form of unsweetened teas.  My favorite being yogi tea Triple Echinacea Green Tea.  It has a spearmint flavor that I like.  And often drink it with breakfast.

There are a TON of different flavored teas out there.  Green tea, black tea, herbal teas, red tea (rooibos) and even white tea.  Just skip the sugar or honey and they’re mostly zero carbs.

All too often it seems like our palates have been sugar coated for years and often times it masks the nice undertones and hints of the real herbs.  And I really enjoy tasting the subtle nuances without all the sugar.  But try different teas, some are caffeinated and some are just herbal.  And you can even get mushroom tea, which is thought to boost the immune system.

I don’t really do coffee, but black coffee is low carb.  Even with cream.  Just no sugar.  There are even sugar free options should you desire to take the edge of straight black coffee.  The only issue with coffee is that for some people, the caffeine content in coffee can affect blood sugar levels.  So you’ll have to test it yourself to see if it causes slower weight loss or cravings.

And for those who don’t mind artificial sweeteners, then there are a slew of diet drinks out there that are low carb.  It’s recommended to try to stick with Splenda as the sugar alternative.  Years ago, I tried Stevia, an herb from South America and I had a low blood sugar response to it, so I don’t use Stevia personally.  However, I have noticed that if I avoid artificial sweeteners, then I just do better on the diet.  But that might just be me.

One of my favorite low carb beverages is that Yogi Green Tea with echinacea mixed with a Reishi, Cordyceps and Shiitake mushroom blend.  The tea from Fungi Perfecti is strong, but mixed with the Yogi tea, then you are really getting a full spectrum of green tea benefits and immunomodulating mushroom benefits.  And it’s about 1g of carbs?  Sweet!
